City of Las Vegas Adopts Innovative Email Security

“Not only is BitDam an insurance policy, it’s an insurance policy that pays us dividends every day

Michael Lee Sherwood, Director, Information Technologies

Michael Lee Sherwood, Director, Information Technologies for the City of Las Vegas, is constantly looking for additional ways to protect the city. “In Cyber Security, nothing’s ever enough. There’s always more you can do”, he explained.

While the City of Las Vegas already had a Secure Email Gateway (SEG) in place, Sherwood and his team were looking for Advanced Threat Protection (ATP) as an additional layer to make email more secure and ensure that end-users – the city’s thousands of employees – are safe to click any file or link that appears in their inboxes.

They have deployed BitDam and recognized the impact quickly.

Within just a few weeks BitDam detected:

attacks that bypassed the SEG
unique attacks
Emotet trojans

A true cloud-native solution, deploying BitDam was a 5-minute task.  Once set-up, users experience little latency between the time of entry to email delivery, according to Sherwood.

BitDam scans emails pre-delivery to eliminate threats like ransomware, known and unknown malware, and zero-day attacks before they enter the network. The City of Las Vegas’ savings using BitDam during this 4 weeks period is estimated at more than $2M. According to U.S. CERT, each Emotet infection alone has cost local governments up to $1 million to remediate.
